MIDWAY FLASH! MIDWAY FLASH! Ringling's Alleged Animal Abuse Fine Makes CNN Headlines ...

It flashed across CNN this morning -- jolting me out of my chair as I was slaving heroically over the indexing for my book, Inside the Changing Circus -- a tortuously tedious task taunting my sanity -- a task I do not relish. So, let's take a break, David, I said to myself!

I dug further, and this I struck from the Huffington Post:

"Life's no circus for the Ringling Brothers these days.

The USDA announced Monday that an agreement was reached where Feld Entertainment, Inc., doing business as Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus (Feld), will pay a $270,000 fine for allegedly violating the Animal Welfare Act (AWA).

According to a USDA press release, Feld also agreed to "develop and implement annual AWA compliance training for all employees who work with and handle animals, including trainers, handlers, attendants and veterinarians starting March 31, 2012, and to establish an AWA compliance position on its staff by February 28, 2012."

End of the Huffington.

Am I surprised? In the wake of that horrible PETA undercover YouTube of Ringling elephants being sadistically slapped around by bull hooks and cursed at, no, I'm not.

And certainly not, considering that, as far as I know, the Felds have yet to explain to us how the film footage was, as they claimed when it hit the web, "misleadingly edited."

Mr. Feld? I still await a few peeps from you on the issue. Your explanation, sir?

Why I am so heated over this? Because this kind of news hurts ALL circuses, that's why.

And Ringling Bros. should lead the way, not down into a dark ages ditch, but up onto a higher more enlightened road.

Marijuana (Cannabis sativa)

Background

Marijuana (Cannabis sativa)
Marijuana, hemp, and cannabis are common names for plants of the genus Cannabis . The term hemp is often used for cannabis strains grown specifically for production of paper, rope, and cloth. Other cannabis strains are used to make recreational and medicinal drugs. The major difference between the main types of cannabis plants is the amount of the psychoactive compound tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) they contain.
Cannabis has been used medicinally for approximately 5,000 years. The most widely used components of the herb in traditional medicine are the seed and seed oil. Cannabis sativa is widely used recreationally (inhaled or taken by mouth) to achieve increased feelings of well-being.
Cannabis has been studied for the treatment of a number of conditions, including eczema, epilepsy, chronic pain, insomnia, and symptoms of multiple sclerosis. The most significant benefits have been found in the treatment of chronic pain and symptoms of multiple sclerosis.
The two most studied cannabinoid compounds of Cannabis sativa are the psychoactive tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and the nonpsychoactive cannabidiol (CBD).

Lactobacillus acidophilus

Acidophilus (Lactobacillus acidophilus)Lactobacillus acidophilus belongs to a group of bacteria that normally live in the human small intestine and vagina. L. acidophilus is one of the most commonly used probiotics, or "good germs." These are microorganisms that help to maintain a healthy intestinal tract and aid digestion. Common food sources of L. acidophilus include yogurt and fermented soy products, such as miso and tempeh.
Multiple human trials report benefits of L. acidophilus for bacterial vaginosis, a common infection of the vagina. L . acidophilus has long been used as a therapeutic agent for gastrointestinal disorders. However, this and other medicinal uses of L. acidophilus are not supported by strong clinical evidence.

Kia has launched a three-door version of its Picanto to help boost its presence in minicars

Kia has launched a three-door version of its Picanto to help boost its presence in minicars, Europe's third-largest segment with total sales of nearly 1.4 million cars last year.
"The three-door is important to broaden the Picanto's customer base to those looking for a cheaper model and to buyers who want a sportier variant," Kia Europe CEO Paul Philpott said.
Kia expects the three-door variant to cover a third of Picanto sales in Europe. The company plans to increase the Picanto's annual sales in Europe to about 60,000 from 47,094 units in 2010, even though the model won't offer a diesel engine alongside 1.0-liter and 1.2-liter gasoline powerplants.
For buyers looking for better fuel economy, a bi-fuel variant fueled by gasoline or liquefied petroleum gas will launch later this year.
"This Picanto will be the first model offered in Europe with an LPG system installed directly in the factory and not as an aftermarket conversion, so it will have Kia's seven-year warranty," Philpott said.
The Picanto is Kia's second best-selling model in Europe behind the Cee'd compact family. The new Picanto, and the new Rio subcompact which went on sale in late August, are the crucial models in Kia's quest to boost sales in Europe by 70 percent to 450,000 units by 2013 from 262,627 units last year.
Fast Facts
Target buyers: Single people and young families.
New technology: Heated steering wheel and LED headlamps, both a first for Europe in the minicar segment.
What's good? Exterior and interior design, built-in capability for a vast array of digital music players.
What's bad? Interior trim fit and finish have been improved a lot, but still lag behind competitors.
Kia launched the five-door variant of the latest Picanto generation in April. The 3595mm-long car has been completely redesigned and re-engineered, growing 60mm in length, with a 15mm longer wheelbase.
"In profile, the new Picanto features significant sculpting and a very prominent rising character line. The result is a layering of light and shadow and this breaks up the height, giving the car a more sure-footed stance," Kia Chief Design Officer Peter Schreyer said.
The basics
Launch: 5-door April, 3-door September.
Base price: 8,990 euros (Germany)
Platform: TA.
Where built: Seosan, South Korea.
Annual sales forecast: 60,000 units (2010).
CO2 emissions: 90-95 g/km (1.0-liter model when running on LPG/gasoline)
Main competitors: Fiat Panda, Peugeot 107, Citroen C1, Hyundai i10, Toyota Aygo.

With the Thema, Lancia adds affordable American muscle

Lancia wouldn't be launching a new flagship sedan right now were it not for parent Fiat's alliance with the Chrysler Group. The arrival of the new Lancia Thema – a rebadged version of the Chrysler 300 – gives the struggling near-premium Italian automaker a powerful large-sized car that it can sell for a mid-sized model's price.
"One of the selling points [of the new Thema] is accessibility," said Saad Chehab, the new head of the Lancia and Chrysler brands. "In these times of crisis, we think that we have an opportunity" to offer customers more value for money, he added.
The Thema starts at 41,400 euros in Italy for the 190-hp 3.0-liter V-6 diesel and tops out at 50,900 euros for the V-6 diesel variant with 239 hp. Lancia expects about 80 percent of Thema buyers to choose models with the diesel, which is built by Italy's VM Motori. Fleet buyers are forecast to account for 70 percent of Thema sales.
Lancia expects most customers to spend 44,000 euros to 47,000 euros for the car, which fills a gap left when the automaker stopped making the hugely unsuccessful Thesis in 2009.
Launched with great fanfare in 2002 after an investment of almost 500 million euros, the Thesis was expected to account for at least 20,000 sales a year. Less than 16,000 units of the Thesis were made during its eight-year life cycle.
With the new Thema, Lancia hopes to repeat the success it had with the first car that wore that badge. The original Thema was Lancia's most successful flagship ever with 358,000 units built from 1984 to 1994.
KEY FACTS
Name: Lancia Thema
Launch date: October-November
Main competitors: Audi A6, BMW 5 series, Mercedes E class, Volvo S80
Annual sales forecast: 10,000 units in a full year in continental Europe; 3,000 units in the UK and Ireland where it is sold as the Chrysler 30
Where built: Brampton, Ontario, Canada
Base price: 41,400 euros (Italy)

Honda pins Civic sales hopes on small diesel

Honda hopes a smaller diesel engine will help revive sales of its latest Civic in Europe, which is no longer the company's best-selling model in the region.
The current Civic offers Europeans only a single diesel, a 2.2-liter unit that is too large in a segment where most buyers want 1.5-liter or 1.6-liter diesel engines.
Honda has developed a 1.6-liter diesel that will be offered in the European Civic by the end of next year.
Alessandro Skerl, head of Honda's Italian unit, said the new 1.6-liter diesel engine will be crucial in a market like Italy where the majority of compact car buyers favor diesels.
Speaking at a press event here, Skerl said cars with small diesel engines of 1.6-liter displacement or less account more than 50 percent of compact segment sales. "We expect the 1.6-liter diesel to cover 65 percent of Civic sales," he said.
Honda is postponing the Civic's launch due to parts shortages caused by the floods in Thailand. The company had planned to begin the European rollout of the ninth-generation Civic in the U.K. and Germany in late January. Shipments are now expected to begin by the end of February.
The Civic debuts with 1.4-liter and 1.8-liter gasoline engines and a 2.2-liter diesel unit. The diesel is its greenest engine, with power increased by 10hp to 150hp while CO2 emissions are reduced by 20 percent to 110g/km.
The new Civic for Europe still has the fuel tank housed under the front seat to improve roominess and cargo space. The Japanese and U.S. Civics have the fuel tank positioned between the rear seat and the trunk.
In the first nine months, Civic sales in western Europe declined 29 percent to 27,882 units, according to JATO Dynamics. Sales of the company's best-selling model in Europe, the Jazz small minivan, fell 15 percent to 38,422 in the same period.
Honda targets annual European sales of 100,000 Civics as soon as its engine range is complete.

Suzuki Motor Corp. is launching arbitration

TOKYO -– Suzuki Motor Corp. is launching arbitration proceedings against Volkswagen AG in an attempt to force the German carmaker to relinquish its 19.89 percent stake in Suzuki.
Suzuki said it will initiate the action on Nov. 24 at the ICC International Court of Arbitration in London. Suzuki wants its estranged German partner to sell its stake back to Suzuki or a third party designated by Suzuki.
"The arbitration proceedings follow Suzuki's termination of its alliance with Volkswagen AG on 18 November 2011, and Volkswagen AG's lack of response to Suzuki's requests for the disposition of its shares," Suzuki said in the release.
Volkswagen stepped in as Suzuki's biggest shareholder in 2009. It took the 19.89 percent stake in Suzuki, while Suzuki took a 1.49 percent holding in VW.The partnership was billed as a way for VW to get access to the India market, where Suzuki is strong, and for Suzuki to get advanced technologies from VW that it doesn't have the budget to develop on its own.
But the alliance began unraveling earlier this year, when VW described Suzuki as an "associate" it has sizable management control over. That didn't fly in Suzuki's boardroom.
Since then, VW has accused Suzuki of breaching their agreement by sourcing diesel engines from Fiat. And Suzuki fired back that VW broke it by not sharing advanced drivetrain technologies that Suzuki had its eyes on. Their two-year tie up never yielded a joint project.
On Sept. 12, Suzuki demanded that VW return its 19.89 percent stake in Suzuki. And on Nov. 18, Suzuki announced unilaterally that it was ending the partnership.
"Volkswagen AG did not allow Suzuki access to Volkswagen AG's core technology and it also became clear that there were differences between Suzuki and Volkswagen in the understanding of 'independence,'" Suzuki said at the time. "The cross-shareholding alliance must be dissolved immediately and in so doing the parties will return to their independent status."
Volkswagen has rejected Suzuki's efforts to end the partnership, calling them actions "without foundation," and has said it plans to retain the holding.

2012 Jeep Wrangler

The 2012 Jeep Wrangler will hold its value better in five years than any other vehicle, Kelley Blue Book predicts.
The Wrangler has risen to the top of the compact SUV category in separate rankings by ALG and Kelley Blue Book, which predict future resale values.
Five years from now, Kelley Blue Book predicts, a 2012 Wrangler will be worth 55 percent of its current, new-vehicle price. That projected residual value put it at the top of Kelley Blue Book's compact vehicle category, up from second place last year, when the 2011 Wrangler's residual value was projected at 45.2 percent.
Kelley Blue Book named Toyota as it best resale-value brand, with a predicted residual of 40.5 percent, up from 38.5 percent last year. Lexus, with a predicted value of 37.9, up from 36.4 percent last year, was named best resale luxury brand. Jeep, buoyed by Wrangler, jumped to second place in the top 10 brand ranking, up from eighth a year ago. Scion, which didn't make the top 10 last year, climbed to No. 3.
Eric Ibara, director of residual consulting at Kelley Blue Book, says his company is "amazed" at how well Wrangler holds its value — and isn't sure why. It competes in a category with such vehicles as the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4 and Hyundai Tucson but is perceived as different from them, he says.
"We have some theories," Ibara says. "It's easy seeing those vehicles competing against each other, but there's not much competition for a Wrangler.
"Part of its popularity, we think, is just being unique."
Kelley Blue Book released its resale brand rankings as part of its 2012 Residual Value Analysis. Its predictions are for five years to reflect the typical length of new-vehicle ownership.
ALG gave the nod to Subaru as its mainstream brand winner at 50 percent, down from 53 percent last year.
Lexus was the top luxury brand in ALG's rankings
ALG released its rankings as part of its 13th Annual Residual Value Awards. Its predictions are for 36 months, the typical length of a lease. ALG would not release predicted residuals for top finishers in its vehicle segments.
Raj Sundaram, a senior vice president at DealerTrack Holdings Inc., ALG's former owner, is a consultant to ALG as it transitions to new owner TrueCar Inc. He says ALG set its overall 2012 model residual projections lower than it had set projections last year and the year before. That's because an uptick in leasing that started last year will result in more off-lease vehicles returning to the market in greater numbers, which is expected to lower used-vehicle prices in three years.
On average, ALG set residual values for nonluxury vehicles at 45 percent for 2012, down from 47 in 2011. On the luxury side, ALG set average projections at 45.5 for 2012, down from 47 in 2011.
"In 2014 toward the second half and in 2015 we do think supply will be a very different dynamic, higher than what we're experiencing this year and next year," Sundaram says. "We have brought our residuals down."
As in previous years, import brands dominate both companies' projected residual rankings.

Honda AC-X

Honda Motor Co. will debut a trio of concept cars at the Tokyo Motor Show that foreshadow the Japanese automaker's vision for a battery-powered future.
The concepts presage cars that could come to market about two generations from now, say in 2020.
A key feature of each of the cars is a pair of steering handles that are pulled backward and forward to direct the car instead of a wheel. Honda says the technology is intuitive and much like steering a bicycle. When you want to turn left, you move the right handle forward. When you want to move right, you do the opposite.
AC-X: The AC-X, for Advanced Cruiser Experience, is a wedge-shaped plug-in hybrid sedan that takes heavy styling cues from the Honda FCX Clarity fuel cell vehicle.
For improved aerodynamics, it has an adjustable rear diffuser and body undercover that extend during highway driving to improve mileage. Formula One-inspired wheel covers also help.
The AC-X, with a drag coefficient of 0.21, targets fuel efficiency of 110 kilometers per liter, or 258 mpg, with its 120-kilowatt electric motor and 1.6-liter engine. It is expected to go 31 miles in electric-only mode.
Micro Commuter Concept: This three-seat city runabout follows in the tradition of the Nissan Pivo concept series and the Toyota iQ minicar.
Its lithium ion battery gives it a range of 37 miles. But the so-called Loop Batter battery pack also can be taken out and plugged into other vehicles, including an electric minimotorbike. That two-wheeler, dubbed the Motor Compo, can be loaded aboard the Micro Commuter Concept.
Colorful body panels can be swapped in and out like the exchangeable skins of a smartphone to customize your ride.
Small Sports EV Concept: Honda is waiting until the show to give detailed specifications of this compact convertible electric vehicle. But sketches depict a stubby, low-slung car reminiscent of the CR-Z sporty hybrid.

Mitsubishi PX-MiEV II

Mitsubishi Motors Corp. will unveil a close- to-market version of a plug-in hybrid crossover due next year and a new global small car bearing the revived Mirage name at the Tokyo show.
The all-wheel-drive PX-MiEV II hints strongly at the hybrid version of the Outlander crossover that Mitsubishi plans to launch in the Japanese fiscal year that begins April 1. It uses a two-motor plug-in hybrid system running on a lithium ion battery and a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder gasoline engine. One motor powers the front wheels; the other, the rear ones.
The Mirage enters production in Thailand next year and is bound for the United States as early as 2013. The hatchback replaces the Colt, which is being phased out. Mitsubishi dropped the Mirage nameplate in the early 2000s.
The Mirage is 10 percent lighter than the Colt. It is powered by a 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine mated to a continuously variable transmission.

NIssan Pivo3

But like its cousins, which take the name Pivo from "pivot," the Pivo3 is highly maneuverable with a tight 6.5-foot turning radius, thanks to in-wheel motors that allow its wheels to turn independently. The car can do a U-turn on roads only 13 feet wide.

Nissan Motor Co. is rolling out an update of its compact Pivo electric car with four-wheel independent steering at this month's Tokyo Motor Show.
The Pivo3 looks much closer to market than either of its "bubble-on-wheels" predecessors, the first of which was shown at the 2005 Tokyo show. The Pivo2 appeared two years later.
Another big difference: The Pivo3 features what Nissan calls "Automatic Valet Parking." The technology allows the Pivo3 to park itself in specially equipped parking lots. While the driver is away, the car also recharges its battery. And when it is time to go, the driver simply summons the Pivo3 by mobile phone and the car drives itself to pick up its owner.

Subaru Advanced Tourer Concept

Subaru will introduce an updated vision for its hybrid due in 2013 at the Tokyo show.
The all-wheel-drive Advanced Tourer Concept is based on Toyota technology.
It gets a downsized 1.6-liter, turbocharged, direct-injection engine teamed with a hybrid electric motor system and Subaru's latest continuously variable transmission.
Subaru also will show a production version of the BRZ rear-wheel-drive sporty car. It will unveil a concept of an STI version of the BRZ at the Los Angeles Auto Show this week.

Flying for Gold at Monte Carlo 2012

Thanks to Jack Ryan, I have a list in Italian of some 26 acts slated to compete for Gold Clowns at the next bash Over There ...

I always look for countries, seeking to confirm or revise my general impression of which nations turn out the top acts. I assume that Princess Stephanie and her crowd are generally fair about international inclusion.

Know what? I think they are, for this is reflected in the talent signed by our U.S. circuses, year after year.

This year's Monte Carlo lineup, no surprise, draws heavily from Russia and its old Communist block associate countries, and from Europe, to the tune of 14 of the acts. China checks in with only two, a real surprise -- unless the Chinese are erring on the side of underexposure. The tent will come alive with horses and ponies, contortionists and jugglers and acrobats -- the usual panoply

And, roller skaters! A good old fashioned roller skating act? No, no, this one's from the center of cerebral contortion -- France!

Now, back to Over Here. Remember, the United States of America? Large expansive sigh ... sigh ... sigh, have we here in Occupied U.S.A. not a single American performer on the bill? Technically, NO.

However, notes Jack -- Thank you Jack -- a Japanese juggler named Ty Tojo carries a strong U.S. connection to the festival. "He was born there [in Japan] but has long lived in Las Vegas with his family." Ty's stepfather, and the man who trained him, is juggler Dick Franco.

Memo to American born performers (are there any out there working still?): Change your names to French, Russian, or Chinese. Or Japanese. Apply for dual citizenships. Get thee to a plastic surgeon for an ethnicity overhaul. And do what the Russian circus wannabes had to do long before they staged their revolution back in 1917. Some changed their names to foster outside affiliations. Suddenly, the local rope walker who got no respect in his home rings, now returning to another part of the country as an "Italian import," drew cheers from the crowds.

Ah, Planet Earth is such a callow shallow place.

[I'm still charmed by my memory of the home-made dog act I saw on Carson & Barnes this last season. For them, let's see -- new wave French minimalism from outer Siberia?]

Suzuki Swift EV Hybrid

Suzuki Motor Corp. will spotlight what it calls its "unparalleled expertise" in small cars at the Tokyo Motor Show with two new tiny concept cars and the world premiere of a Swift electric vehicle with a range-extending engine similar in design to the Chevrolet Volt.
The so-called Swift EV Hybrid concept is based on the Japan-made Swift small car, which was once planned for the United States but was put on hold when the yen's rise against the dollar made exporting the car to the United States an unprofitable proposition.
The car runs on electric power for about 11 miles. When the battery runs down, a gasoline-powered engine generator kicks in to recharge it. The engine does not directly power the wheels.
The Swift EV Hybrid follows the Swift Plug-in Hybrid concept that debuted in 2009. That vehicle drew on both the engine and the battery to power the wheels.
That concept never made it to showrooms. Suzuki is still seeking a market entry with an electrified drivetrain.
Suzuki had hoped to use its partnership with Volkswagen AG for help with hybrids. But Suzuki says it wants to end the arrangement. That leaves Suzuki as the only one of Japan's big seven automakers without firm plans to launch a hybrid or an electric vehicle.
Suzuki also plans to introduce two minicars.
The first, the Regina, embodies its concept for its next-generation global small car. It weighs only 1,609 pounds and achieves 75 mpg under Japanese testing cycles, which are not comparable to U.S. mpg ratings.
The other is a bubble-shaped two-seater called the Q-concept. Suzuki says the vehicle is positioned between a motorcycle and an automobile and is meant for short urban commutes.

Lycopene

Lycopene
Lycopene is a carotenoid present in human serum and skin as well as the liver, adrenal glands, lungs, prostate and colon. Lycopene has been found to possess antioxidant and antiproliferative properties in animal and laboratory studies, although activity in humans remains controversial.
Numerous studies correlate high intake of lycopene-containing foods or high lycopene serum levels with reduced incidence of cancer, cardiovascular disease, and macular degeneration. However, estimates of lycopene consumption have been based on reported tomato intake, not on the use of lycopene supplements. Since tomatoes are sources of other nutrients, including vitamin C, folate, and potassium, it is not clear that lycopene itself is beneficial.
There is no well-established definition of "lycopene deficiency," and direct evidence that repletion of low lycopene levels has any benefit is lacking.
